Who knew? Who knew Presidents can behave – and act – as Dictators?

Most of us grew up with certain working assumptions about Presidents. Regardless of which Party they belonged to there were certain conventional wisdom perceptions that generally held. Once in a while a President would break with tradition, shatter conventional wisdom, or simple screw up pretty bad. But these were the exceptions, not the rule.

But things are different with Trump.

Trump’s consistent, daily barrage of words and actions affronting working assumptions and conventional wisdom about what a President is can be simply head twisting and jarring. And the vast majority of the times he does this it is to assert his power, divide the nation, and expand his control.

Who knew a President could just violate the standard practice of executing power within a legislatively mandated budget? Want money to build a wall even though it is not in the budget? No problema! Take it from the Military’s budget. Why should that matter anyway? Presidents should be able to do that! Except. Except that is a slap in the face of good government accepted practice. Except that gives the President yet one more tool to do as he pleases without consulting Congress.

Who knew a President could govern with many Departments and other critical positions in the bureaucracy with either no Directors or acting Directors? Want a Department to do something? No problema! Just tell them directly! i.e.: No research on global warming and such. What’s wrong with a shaking up the bureaucracy a little bit and instilling a sense of ‘just get it done (or don’t do it) because the President wants it’? What is wrong with this approach is that it makes a mockery of well established governance practices that have been effective for decades. What is wrong with this approach is that it is yet another example of Presidential power grab.

Who knew a President did not have to be what most people would say decent or empathetic? Who knew a President’s insults and brawl-like behavior would be if not welcomed, tolerated by ½ of Americans? Want to rile your base? No problema! Just insult the opposition with mockery and worse. What’s wrong with having a President that tells it like it is and doesn’t hold back? What is wrong with this is that it shatters centuries of decorum. What is wrong with this is that it makes it challenging if not impossible to share the President’s speeches with the youth of America because these no longer are aspirational, try to unite the Nation, or take the higher ground. Rather they are insulting, divisive, and gutter-talk.

Who knew a President did not need a Press Department, Press briefing, or Press conferences? Who knew that a President would just relate to the common citizenry by simply expressing his thoughts on a whim via social media? Want to tell the world what you think about that Fox News report? No problema! Just Tweet it. What’s wrong with a little candor? What’s wrong with directly connecting with your constituent? There is nothing wrong with this – except. Except if this ‘direct-connect’ is abused to the extent that his constituency relies exclusively on the President’s Tweets and his preferred news media outlets for their information. This is a Dictator’s dream. Trump has his base in the palm of his hands. And – even though they technically have the freedom to walk away and seek other news sources – they stay with him, adhering to his every word, and never ever criticizing him. It is governing through personality cult. It is governing by creating ‘fear of the other’. Oh, how the strong man of the past would applaud him!

And now what? What can we who see these trends towards totalitarianism and a Presidency that is closer to a Dictator than even before do? No problema! Get your friend to register to vote and to get his cousin to register to vote and then go vote vote vote November of 2020 to finally end this grueling nightmare. That is, assuming he will not create a crisis that somehow either de-legitimizes the election – or the election is not held at all.

Republican and Democratic Party position: Can we talk?

It is too bad that we can’t discuss the difference in policy positions of the two major political parties in the U.S. This President has made it impossible to do so. Instead his hyperbolic language – including lies and insults – degrade any conversation to a screaming match of bumper-sticker, simplistic and charged accusations.

Here are the top ten ways this is happening today:

ISSUE
Republican Policy / How Democrats distort it
Democratic Policy / How Republicans distort it

ABORTION
Anti-abortion / Women hater
Pro-choice / Baby killer

GUNS
Pro-gun / NRA lovers
Gun-control / Communist

IMMIGRATION
Anti-immigration / Inhumane
Pro-immigration / Anti-American

THE BORDER
Secure borders / America First fanatics
Controlled borders / Open borders fanatics

DEFENSE
Strong defense / Militaristic
Measured defense / Soft on defense

TRADE
Anti-trade deals / Illogical economics
Pro-diplomatic deals / Giving away the store

BUSINESS
Pro-business / Insensitive capitalists
Pro-consumer / Socialist and communist

MEDIA
Skeptic of media / Propagandist
Pro-1st Amendment / Naive

JUDGES
Conservative judges / Stacking courts with fundamentalists
Liberal judges / Would stack courts with socialists

TAX CUTS
Tax cut for the wealthy / Pandering to the rich
Tax cut for the middle class / Income redistribution and reparations

HEALTH INSURANCE
Prefer Private health insurance / Sold out to big farma
Prefer Obamacare / Socialized medicine

Too bad. Simply too bad that we can not argue sensibly as to the merits of the different positions. And maybe – just maybe – find common ground and/or places where we intersect and could pursue legislation.

Too late. That time is gone.

We have to change the man in the White House and reclaim a sense of civility; reclaim our capacity to disagree without being disagreeable; and, respect – and dare I say trust? – each other. Dreaming? Possibly. But, rather that than despair.

Every day it is more difficult to control the rage. Yet we must.

Every day it is more difficult to control the rage. Yet we must.

I am trying really – really – hard to understand and not think evil of Trump supporters. Yet if you support Trump’s policies and choose to remain silent regarding his behavior then you have a character flaw that needs addressing.

There is no comparison to this situation. Any attempt to create a comparison with any other situation is false equivalency.

Why are there no Republicans coming out and clarifying – and being up front – that the end point of many of trump’s policies may indeed be legitimate defensible; but his behavior and many of his tactics are simply despicable.

To remain silent regarding Trump’s despicable comments and tactics is to be complicit with an immoral approach to governance. Fear mongering, dividing people, and flaring up hatred is not a way to govern a country.

Why for crying out loud must this man disparage, demean, and insult four young women that have the fortitude of having ran for office and gotten duly elected? What other leader in the world in recent history has ever so insulted members of their own country’s governing bodies? What does he stand to gain from this other than to spike the hatred of people that voted for him?

I can hear his supporters saying YES! “This man speaks for us! You tell them Trump!”

I can see his supporters laughing with delight on hearing Trump say these things. I have seen Trump supporters laugh with delight in hearing him say such things. The ugly underbelly of racism, the ugly underbelly of hatred of immigrants, and the ugly underbelly of total lack of respect for women in many Trump supporters comes through loud and clear. I know. The people that say these things and laugh at Trump’s “frankness” are my own family members, they are my friends, and they are people that are not so quiet in certain circles about such things.

I usually bite my tongue or quietly turn around or simply walk away when I hear these things. I am so tired of doing that! It has become increasingly difficult to be in the same space as these individuals who many profess to be faith centered yet ally with these vile comments from the President. Demonstrating charity and love to these individuals, engaging them in conversations about sports or other supposedly less volatile topics, has become a draining chore.

Yet if I do not engage them; or yet if I fight them then Trump wins. Because he IS trying to divide us and ensure that his people hear and listen to only the channels of information that he controls. He is trying relentlessly to see to it that his truth becomes their truth – and that his message is the only message they voluntarily listen to.

When will people that have supported Trump in the past realize that they have been conned? When will these people realize that the man is a con man! When will these people wake up and see that the destructive nature of this warped personality has sickened them like a cancer?

Could it be that increasingly so a large number of people that have supported Trump in the past are literally embarrassed to admit they have been conned? Could it be that a large number of Trump’s supporters are simply too embarrassed to admit that they have been the victim of one of history’s most livid and vile attempts at creating mass hysteria through fear, lies, and manipulation of social media?

Is it too late for these folks to wake up? Is it too late for them to detox? Is it too late for them – like ex addicts –  admit they have been conned by a psychological affront more powerful than any chemical dependency?

… Maybe I should just pray for them and keeping them in my thoughts …

Lest I lose these in the virtual world:

[1] Frankly, f*ck you Trump! Our apology to our familia and friends if this is too crass. Sorry if we sound mad. We are… Governing through fear is so Castro-like. It is these very people – the Salvadorans, Cubans, Guatemalans, Mexicans, Ethiopians, and other immigrants – that indeed make America great. THEY do not need be to be round up like common criminals. Maybe it is the Trump crew that needs to be round up this week and sent back to wherever their grandparents came from. This Administration’s terror tactics are despicable, inhumane, and right down cruel. This is simply not our America. This is not the America that welcomed us over 50 years ago. This is not the America that embraced diversity. This is not the America we love… Thank God we live in this little enclave we call Silver Spring / Takoma Park where we still welcome all and we have local elected officials and activists that have the fortitude to stand up for what is morally right. [2] Pathetic. This charade of a President can’t even get history right…. Can you imagine summer camps not being able to share with children the President’s Fourth of July speech because of its countless historical inaccuracies? Simply pathetic. …. Trump’s Fourth of July history speech: Turns out there weren’t airports back then

[3] Two stanzas “conveniently” left out when we sing THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND, eerily meaningful today 》

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said “No Trespassing.”
But on the other side it didn’t say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking:
Is this land made for you and me?

The Democrats debate. And Trump Tweets.

The Democrats debate. And Trump Tweets.

Two nights. Two debates. 20 candidates. The Democratic Presidential Candidates Debate.

Once you get past the talking heads and media hype and the spectacle it was you are left with 20 good men and women who are trying to unseat Donald J. Trump as President of the United States. Any of these 20 individuals would be a major improvement over Trump. Any of them. From the most liberal/progressive to the most conservative.

Trump’s populist approach of Tweeting ‘every day man’ type comments – surely intended to fire up his base by demonstrating he is just a regular guy – is so tired. These 20 good folks have legitimate, developed, rational policy positions on issues from health care to war. Trump has simplistic anecdotal symbolic ideas that are simply not fleshed out, thought through, or – God forbid! – analyzed. Build the wall! Institute tariffs! Ask citizenship question in the Census!… and such.

(The Democrats are not without their populist traps. Medicare for all! It’s her body! No war!… These are shallow, simplistic bumper stickers slogans that do not withstand scrutiny.)

Yet, comparing the Democratic candidate to Trump is like comparing a tomato on the vine to a rotting tomato. One has so much potential; the other is washed up, proven worthless, with no redeeming value – except maybe to mix with manure as compost.

Any one of the Democrats will do.

I just hope that when s/he accepts the nomination, s/he will ask all candidates that ran to come up to the stage and be recognized as future cabinet members and department heads… What a symbolic gesture that would be! What better way to enlist the energy for each and every one of the candidates than to honor their efforts – and the efforts of their volunteers – by inviting them to the leadership table… Then maybe – just maybe – all those long hours of door knocking, campaigning, and fundraising will prove to be beneficial for the common good even if their nominee did not win. … Wouldn’t that be something? It would be quite something indeed to see  each candidate willingly put himself/herself at the service of the winners, offering them their infrastructure (i.e.: mailing lists, list of donors, etc.) and promising to authentically and enthusiastically campaign for, excite others, and support the nominee.

If the Democrats hold together they will defeat Trump.

Now, whether Trump accepts the results of the elections is another matter… It would not surprise me if Team Trump is already concocting shenanigans to circumvent the election results if he were to lose. Will he declare a national emergency? Will he claim the election was flawed? It would not surprise me one iota it Trump simply refuses to accept a loss and takes dramatic steps to stay in power… Clearly this man has no limit – he has no filter – to what he would do to gain and stay in power.

Somebody please get this man some help.

Somebody please get this man some help.

You don’t have to be a psychiatrist, you don’t have to be a social worker, you don’t have to be a professional to notice that our President is simply not well.

Mind you, I know we are all dysfunctional in some ways and we all suffer from some level of abnormality.

But, this guy is off the rocket.

Those around him need to stop enabling him.

Those that see him as a useful idiot need to stop praising him with endless accolades.

Anecdotes abound. But one that typifies his more than uncommon behavior and propensity to lie is when he recently publicly praised the crowds on the streets of London. He praised them, claiming they were there happy to see him.

No. These folks were protesting him. Did he not know that?!? Really?!?

I don’t know what the worst interpretation is.

If those around him did not specify to him that the crowds were protesting and instead told him they were cheering him – and he believed them – it is proof that he is being totally manipulated.

If he simply lied and said the crowds were cheering him while fully knowing they were protesting him, it simply proves he is – as many have said – a pathological liar, hoping that if he says something enough his supporters will disregard the obvious, undeniable truth.

Either way, there is something very wrong here.

There seems to be a substantial part of America that simply chooses to have a single source of ‘news’. They are simply not interested in any other channels. They don’t want to be bothered. It is real to them only if it appears on Fox News and only if the President affirms it.

Add to this the fact that the vast majority of Senators and Republican governors will adhere to Trump’s unorthodoxy – whatever that might be – and you get the reality in which we live: A functional dictatorship.

Unless Trump is resoundly defeated in the 2020 elections and his authoritarian course is reversed, the U.S.A. will fall prey to continuing a functional dictatorship. Couple this with the increasing complexity of society; the many people that feel overwhelmed; the backlash to science, diversity, and pluralism; and you get a very bad situation… A situation that might just be irreversible. A situation where the masses will gladly accept being spoon fed as long as they can practice their consumerism religion, be lulled by increasingly bad entertainment, and intoxicated by corrupt sports… Think Roman Empire before its fall. (Are we there yet?)

Inaction is being complicit in the creation of this new Orwellian Trump World.

Assuming others will do their civic duty while you enjoy your frills is being derelict of your civic duties.

Making excuses, claiming to be too busy, and throwing up our arms in disgust equals joining the Trump Team.

Don’t despair. We can do this. Keep talking to his supporters. But, more importantly, talk to your laid back friends – the ones that will listen to you. Share with them your concern, your passion. Ask them – beg them if you must – to take this situation seriously.

This man needs help. We can help him. Tough love is in order.

But first we must get him out of our house – the White House.

So different, yet so similar – and inescapably interwoven

Still wowed by the awesome potential of these dysfunctional places.

They are so similar, yet so different. So close yet so far. So beautiful outside yet so much ugliness goes on inside. The cause of so much good. And the cause of so much deep hurt. The best of humankind. And the worst of humankind.

One comes from the chest pumping belief in their ‘exceptionalism’ and ‘manifest destiny’… The other comes from the fist pumping belief in their ‘new man’ and ‘proletariat revolution’.

One lives and dies on the mythology of capitalism… The other lives and dies on the mythology of communism.

In one the 5 percent covertly structures the system to self-benefit and perpetuate power… In the other 5 percent overtly structures the system to self-benefit and perpetuate power.

One touts its military might as Goliath in the name of world order… The other welcome others’ military might and flaunts it internationally in the name of world equity.

Both came to be by the genocide of native people and the enslavement of Africans… Perpetrated in one predominantly by Anglos; the other by Spaniards.

One survives in part by the exploitation of Latinos and keeping Blacks down… The other survives mostly by the exploitation of its own citizens.

Maybe someday somehow somewhen they will look past their self-conceited righteousness and ego trips and see that they are meant to be friends; that they are meant to be partners. They are meant to be supportive of each other.

They are interwoven in their inescapable past, the problematic present, and inevitable future. History has joined them at the hip – even if one outsizes the other. Today they are at odds – even as regular folks know best. And the future is bright – even as those in power persist otherwise.

Maybe someday they will move beyond their own dysfunction and identify the intersection of their self-interest… Maybe someday they will realize that more contact among their everyday people is a good thing for both… Maybe someday they will rekindle diplomacy based on mutual respect, mutual forgiveness, and shared experiences…

Maybe someday we’ll see the transformation of a relation that has been broken for way too long and has always meant to be positive, constructive, supportive, joyful, and celebratory… ¡Basta!

2020 vision for 2020

Laser sharp focus. That is what it will take to beat Trump in 2020. A 2020 vision.

Keep the eye of the prize:

  • Electing a Democratic President, House, and Senate to roll back the mean-spirited, economically biased, self-serving policies that Trump has instituted.

The damage is real. And it will take decades to fix the harm and hurt this four year failed Presidency will cause. But we have to start somewhere.

A clear vision – a 2020 vision – is necessary for the 2020 elections.

The talking heads are talking. The policy wonks are analyzing. The strategists are strategizing… And the vast majority of America may not care enough to take the time to go vote… And that is where we who care, have the time, energy, and inclination can make a difference.

  • Forget about convincing people to change their minds… Enthuse people to change their hearts.
  • Forget about blasting the personality of Trump… Emphasize the personal impacts of his policies.
  • Forget about Fox News and the Alt-Right… Talk up our own channels and networks.
  • Pursue not only massive mobilization… But also target smartly – particularly geographically (i.e.: Electoral College.)

And, most importantly: Unite, unite, unite… Here’s a possible 1-2-3 laser sharp focused punch:

[1] Encourage your favorite contender to take the Pledge

The fact that we may have as many as 30 people seeking the Democratic nomination for President should not be viewed as a negative. Rather, let’s commit to use those 30 organizations and political machines to get out the vote for whomever the nominee is.

The group Indivisible has created the novel idea of asking each Democratic contender for the Presidency to pledge to support the nominee. See https://pledge.indivisible.org/  What a wonderful, simple idea!

… just think about it: If each candidate takes – and acts – on the pledge we’ll have 30+ networks of volunteers, contributors, and committed folks already on the ground to give a final push and get the vote out in November 2020… The Pledge is simple:

  • Make the primary constructive;
  • Rally behind the winner; and,
  • Do the work to beat Trump

… Beauty in simplicity.

Add to that the many issue-oriented groups that form the tapestry of Democratic ideals, including:

[2] Weave your Network

There are so many issue-oriented groups that know the damage being done by Trump to the issue they are passionate about. What if all these groups signed a similar pledge to support the nominee, wow!

It is the interests of these groups that when connected can weave the fabric of a new America. This issues deal with the essence of our survival as a people. These include:

  • The environment
  • Health care
  • Immigration
  • Peace
  • Social equity
  • A fair economy

And so many more

[3] Promote the idea that the nominee should commit to a coalition government

What if: What if the Democratic Nominee committed to include a majority of the good people that sought the nomination in her/his cabinet/appointees to form a truly coalition government… Can you imagine if before the general election the nominee would commit to appoint:

  •  Secretary of HUD Castro,
  • Office of Consumer Affairs Director Warren,
  • Cities Initiatives Specialist Buttigieg or Booker,
  • Attorney General Harris,
  • Foreign Affairs Guru Biden,

on and on…

All of these mental calestenics of us that are engaged will be for naught unless we actively – and enthusiastically – remain positive and empathetic and relate our personal passion to individuals with whom we relate. Relationships are built on share experiences. And if we expect our friends, family, social networks, affinity groups, and people we bump into intentionally or by happenstance to vote vote vote, we have to be intentional in engaging in the conversation constructively and joyfully.

What to make of this insanity? Going backwards on Cuba

Every turn. Every decision. Everything this President says and does reflects his questionable character, his lack of moral compass, his duplicity, his true self.

They tell me the economy is doing so much better. I hear the stock market is up, unemployment down… So, am I supposed to jump for joy because of those economic gains and gloss over the depth of angst, the feeling of disgust, the lies and lies and lies of this man that is supposedly representing me as President of the United States?

As Trump honkers down and feels more comfortable in his role as the leader of a disconnected alliance of single issue constituents, we in the opposition are left with the feeling that he could very well repeat his victory dance. His single issue constituents include: The folks that simply will vote for anyone but Democrats; the anti-abortionists (sorry; I will not call them pro-life); the anti-immigration zealots; those that will take short term economic gains at all costs (and conveniently forget the deficit); the military might crowd; and of course, the White Power crowd who see the inevitable demographic changes coming but will go to any length to have a few more years of power. Trump has managed to give each of these constituent single-issue groups enough meat on the bones to please them into continuing to support him though many may be disgusted with his personal character.

In my personal  world of Cuba policy interest, he is simply gone extreme to the max. The latest news has Exxon suing the Cuban Oil Corporation for property expropriated in the early days of the Revolution in the early 60’s – nearly 60 years ago. Exxon is seizing the opportunity made possible by the new rules which allows companies to sue others benefitting from the nationalization of property by the Cuban government. At the same time, the Trump administration is going to bat for the opposition to the Venezuelan government, in hopes to secure Citgo’s assets in a post-Maduro government.

On the surface, this makes all the sense in the world: The U.S. is combating the evil of communism by economically strangling the Cuban and Venezuelan government. The Trump administration’s expectation is that the Cuban and Venezuelan people will rise up and demand the end of the inefficient, dictatorial, communist regimes that have ravaged Cuba and Venezuela… Fair enough.

Except. Except that to expect the Cuban people to rise against the Cuban government for the damage done to Exxon and other corporations and uber-wealthy families is not exactly and inviting approach. I don’t think you will find too many people in Cuba that will take to the streets with “Do Exxon Right” signs. Instead these measure are simply instilling a sense in the Cuban people that the motives of the U.S. government are not exactly in the interest of the Cuban people.

Add to that the historical suspicion that the Cuban government propaganda machine has been able to instill in the Cuban people regarding U.S. motives, and you get the resulting “no thank you” attitude the Cuban people are likely to exhibit. The Cuban people may be looking for more entrepreneurship opportunities, a more market driven economy, and the ability to leave – and return – to their Country. But, they are definitively not looking for a corporate invasion and rampant, unregulated capital infusion without accompanying social improvements. The Cuban people are not looking to change masters. They want to do away with masters.

Instead of encouraging Americans to go to Cuba to directly help the Cuban people – not unlike what is happening in Vietnam – the Trump Administration is making it more difficult to infuse Cuba people with personal capital. This will lead to a more struggling economy. And – most critical – the current Trump Administration will leave the Cuban government no option but to turn to Iran for oil, China for infrastructure, and Russia for defense… Can you blame them?!? (Putin could not have devised a more perfect plan to get Cuba back into his orbit.)

All the while the improvised Cuban people will continue turning to the ‘paquete’ (digital hard drives) from Miami for entertainment, they will continue minimal subsistence thanks to the remittance from family in the U.S., and the holy-hellish agreement with the Church will continue providing minimal care for children and elderly… Cuba will continue withering away, with the military getting richer and living the high life in the Iran/Russia sphere; some will artists playing both sides of the Florida Straits appeasing some on both sides; and the vast majority of Cubans will continue ‘resolviendo’ (making do) – and dreaming of exiting someday somehow… Can you blame them?!?

Yet, the calculus of the Trump administration seems to be very simple. Clearly, they don’t give a rats ass about the Cuban people… All they care about is: Will their new Cuba policy get them votes in Florida in 2020? That is their single short term calculus… Nada mas.

Putin wins. Again. (A critique of the new misguided Cuba policy.)

Putin wins. Again. (A critique of the new misguided Cuba policy.)

Think about it. If you were to concoct a plan to make super-duper sure that Cuba returns to the Russian sphere, what better way than to solidify U.S. as the enemy?

What President Trump and his cronies – including the Florida fools – are doing with Cuba is painful and sad to watch. He is giving Cuba back to Russia. Nada mas.

Quick summary: The Trump administration is enforcing an internationally questionable – and never before enforced – part of the infamous Helms*-Burton Act. (For the young ones: Jesse Helms was a South Carolina Senator who was an admitted racist.) Title 3 of the Act basically gives American citizens the right to sue the users of property confiscated by Castro and his cronies in the early days of the Revolution.

Clarification: The Act does not apply to residential property or governments; only corporate business interest. Clarification too: Given international law, only corporate assets in the U.S. can be seized. This means that Russia cannot be sued for their use of land previously owned by American corporations in Cuba where they built their failed nuclear plants. This means China cannot be sued for building infrastructure in Cuba in property previously owned by American Corporation. Additionally, companies that have no assets in the U.S. cannot be sued. However, our friends’ developments in Cuba (i.e.: Spain, France, and Canada) can certainly be sued… Talk about a nice plan to screw your friends, create chaos, and help Russia! Wow. Brilliant.

And then there are the other two specific ways that Trump is ‘putting the squeeze’ on Cuba: Limit remittances and scale back who can travel to Cuba.

Today there is no limit to the remittances relatives can send Cuba family in the Island. Folk have been able to support their ‘familia’ back home during the past few years by providing for everything from kitchen sinks to money for essentials… Moving forward, no more – or at least, much less.

Today, many Americans travel to Cuba, most with the sincere intention of helping the Cuban people (though inevitably having to shore up the government there in some ways.) Visiting Cuba is like going to a plantation to hang out with the slaves. You can do only what the masters let you do. But still, the slaves welcome your visit and thank you for it… Moving forward, no more – or at least, much less.

Talk about a nice plan to hurt the Cuban people and create anger at the U.S. – just like Russia would want it! Wow. Brilliant.

Any expectation that these draconian measures are going to make the Cuban people rise up and revolt against the Revolution is pure fantasy. Purely idiotic. Pure insanity… It is what was done for 50+ years. And it did not work. Now we are going to revert back to that?

This will help no one – except of course, the Russians. The Cuban government is left with no choice but to welcome them back in full force. The Trump administration’s strong arm tactics leave the Cuban government no alternative but to welcome Russia back into Cuba with open arms… Just like Putin ordered. Than you Trump.

It is so sad to see the Cuban exile community in Miami – particularly our elders – being played as pawns in this ‘game’. It is so sad to see them – many in their 70s and 80s – applaud this Trojan Horse of a policy. It is so sad to see them gullibly swallow the false narrative that Obama’s policy let to Cuba strengthening Venezuela… It is all so sad.

… All we can do at this point is count on the bureaucratic incompetence of this Administration and play them with their own rules… And continue making plans and meandering to the bureaucracy to continue going to Cuba. Don’t let the fools in this Administration scare you into reconsidering. The Cuban people need us to go.

And, lest we forget: This nightmare can end in 18 months. This nightmare can end in November of 2020. This nightmare can end by voting these fools out of office. #RESIST

Trump may or may not be a criminal. That changes little.

Trump may or may not be a criminal. That changes little.

Trump may or may not be a criminal. He is still – in the clear opinion of a small majority of Americans – not a good President. Some 40% – plus or minus – of Americans still are there with him, and fully at least 1/3 will be with him regardless… What does this mean?

There is general consensus that the man is a boisterous, amoral (at best), lies, and is a womanizing sexist, self-centered individual. There is no doubt the guy surrounds himself with shady characters, engages in questionable business practices, and is purely transactional in his relationships. He seems to have little if any capacity to show authentic empathy. And he clearly simply does not care about those that don’t like him; and therefore has no interest whatsoever in placating them or showing that he cares for them.

Yet he was able to build a real-estate empire out of his inheritance. He clearly cares for his adult and young children. He knows how to read raw visceral public sentiment. He is an entertaining entertainer. He is clear and definitive in some things, unbending in others, and compromising in few.

He has shattered political correctness. He has shattered diplomatic protocols. He has totally thrown conventional wisdom out the window.

He clearly has not patience for complexity, critical thinking, or analysis. He clearly sees data as a fungible thing, science as optional, and reason as dispensable.

And 1/3 of America will be with him regardless. Nearly ½ are willing to look the other way for his personal indiscretions and public shenanigans.

His political positions are very, unequivocally clear. Paraphrasing him: “America is the biggest power in the world. We care first and foremost about ourselves. We don’t need to protect everyone around the globe. The government exists to facilitate economic transactions that benefit the wealthy. Regulations are bad. Tax breaks are good. Primary constituent beneficiaries need to be only those that voted for the President; no one else matters.”

His political strategy is equally simple – in many ways brilliantly simple. Politically – he seems to think – the simple minds of ultra conservatives – or single issue – voters can be easily exploited by throwing bones are them:

  • Want the racist vote? Wink at their love of the Confederacy, demean minorities, build a wall.
  • Want the Christian Right vote? Be against Roe, support school vouchers, damn Planned Parenthood, dis gays and trans.
  • Want the military vote? Make sure there’s always a boogie man to fight; buy bigger weapons.
  • Want the uninformed vote? Build a wall, make the media the enemy of the State, make Fox News a propaganda channel for the President.
